Connected by a 17 mile causeway Cayo Coco Cuba is just a short drive from the mainland of Cuba. Once the home of menacing pirates waiting to plunder ships heading for the new world, it is now a tourist Mecca known for its long white beaches and all inclusive service.
Where is Cayo Coco?
Located just off the south central coast of Cuba, Cayo Coco is in the Ciego de Avila Province and the Jardines del Rey chain of islands know in English as” Kings Gardens”
History:
Up until 1955, Fisherman and charcoal producers where the only inhabitants to the cay’s. When fresh water was no longer available and the charcoal industry ended due to electricity the small islands where almost uninhabited. In July of 1988 a 17 mile causeway was finished connecting the cay’s to the mainland and thus began the resort construction boom. The first resort to be built on Cayo Coco was the Guitare Cayo Coco ( Now the Hotel Cayo Coco) As of 2015 the islands have upper of 5000 rooms and starting in 2016 a massive expansion project will begin named The Jardines del Rey project estimated to add an additional 32,000 rooms.

The Melia Cayo Coco resort. (Formally the Leian Cayo Coco resort) This adults only resort caters to over water bungalow lovers with rooms built on stilts over a seawater lagoon. Located just past the first stone causeway it’s a shorter drive then most other resorts so you can check in early and stay late.
