Ever gone to a tropical island like St Croix and found that you had no idea what to do besides the usual beach-going activities? We’re here with a list of the top 8 awesome activities tourists can partake in. This little safe haven in the Caribbean Sea has a lot of cool features for its visitors: from kayaking to windsurfing, from snorkeling to scuba diving, the following is a guide to all of these and more!
A part of the Virgin Isles of the US, the St Croix Island is home to some of the most amazing hotels and resorts. Although the capital of the island state, Charlotte Amalie, is located on the island of St Thomas, many tourists prefer going to St Croix for the simple reason that it’s bigger. Because it’s such a large circle of land, it also has a lot of activities that make sure its visitors leave for home with a lot of pleasant memories.
Before we take a look at the exciting activities available for tourists visiting Saint Croix, we have to settle a simple question. Where is St Croix?
Where Is St Croix?
The island of St Croix is located south of the US Virgin Isles and west of the British Virgin Isles. Its space includes a smaller island to the northeast called Buck Island Reef National Monument or simply Buck Island which is a common attraction for tourists mainly because it harbors a national monument as well as a museum.
Not to be confused with the privately owned “Buck Island” that is located in the British Virgin Isles which is considered the 2nd most expensive private island in the world.
The archipelago of the Virgin Isles is placed right between the islands of San Juan and of the Dominican Republic. To the southeast of the islands, one can observe the islands of Barbuda and Antigua. To reach St Croix Virgin Islands, travelers often pick routes through the island of St Thomas. The flights to St Thomas are far more frequent. Once on the capital island, tourists can journey to St Croix via local airline companies or via ferry.
Still, planes that travel directly to Saint Croix from the US exist. These flights depart from Boston, Miami, San Juan and Charlotte. Once in the island, those who like to have a faster means of transportation can rent a car via the airport rental services available.
8 Things to Do in St Croix US Virgin Islands
Now that we’ve guided your vacation towards the paradise of your dreams, it’s time to look at what exactly one can do once the bags are unpacked. There are so many things to do in St. Croix but we don’t want to overwhelm you, so here are a few of them to help you get started.
1. Visit and Enjoy Different Bodies of Water
With over 30 beautiful beaches available, visiting them all may truly prove to be a feat of strength. Whether it’s the beautiful retreat of Annaly Bay Tide Pools in the North Shore, the sunny surprise of Cramer’s Park (a favorite for families), or the colorful palette of Rainbow Beach, the island of St. Croix has something for everyone. The choice is simple: if your kids don’t like a particular beach, it’s time to move on to the next one.
If you want a different setting, there is the Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve which protects a biodiverse environment that serves as home to several endangered species. Tourists can also go kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, and hiking around the area.
2. Gamble at the St Croix Casino
Another great way to have fun is to go to the local St Croix casino. This can be a family activity but if you’re alone on a short vacation, it’s all the better! Give yourself some time to be entertained by playing a round of poker, blackjack, or roulette.
There’s one thing to remember, though: if you’re going to bet, bet responsibly. Not that getting stuck on a tropical island for a few more days isn’t an appealing thought.
3. Visit the Captain Morgan Rum Distillery
Whether you’re a rum fan or not is irrelevant. The island of St Croix is home to the Captain Morgan rum distillery – the perfect place to feel like you really are in the Caribbean. Famous for their drinking feats, pirates have entered pop culture as a group that really enjoyed the taste of rum. If Captain Morgan is not the first bottle of rum on your wall, you may also check out the Cruzan Rum Distillery.
Cruzan Rum Distillery is another rum producer in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands and the largest supplier of an American label rum. A tour at the Cruzan Rum Factory in Frederiksted is a popular excursion for tourists who wish to get a glimpse of the island’s unique culture and history.
4. Take a Dive From the Sky
We’re talking about skydiving. Whether you choose to do it alone or with your family, jumping out of an airplane is sure to be one of the highlights of your trip! You can even take a selfie video while doing it and then post it on Facebook so that all your friends can see how much fun you’re having!
5. Test Your Golf Abilities
Like most tropical islands in the Caribbean Sea, people traveling to the St Croix resorts can have a great deal of fun swinging around the golf course. A popular place to enjoy the sport is in The Buccaneer Golf Course located in Christiansted.
Your talent for the sophisticated sport is irrelevant. What matters most is how much fun you’re going to have! Nothing strengthens the ties between friends or families than a little bit of friendly competition. There is a total of three golf courses on the island that you can choose from.
6. Visit the Island’s Churches
Saint Croix is not only made of beaches, the St Croix hotels or the St Croix resorts for golf and skydiving. It’s also a place that greatly heals the spirit.
And what better way to go on a spiritual journey than to visit all the churches on St Croix Island. Many houses of worship on the island date back to the early years of the 18th century and they are just within a walking distance from the towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted.
In Frederiksted, there is St. Paul’s Anglican Church, St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. In Christiansted, on the other hand, there is the Holy Cross Catholic Church, Friedensthal “Valley of Peace” Moravian Church and Mase, The Lord Steeple Building, St. John’s Anglican Church, and the Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church.
Even one such monument is a perfect place to sit in quiet meditation and think about all the good things in life–like you relaxing on this pristine tropical paradise.
7. View the Exhibitions of the Museums
There are a lot of interesting culturally enlightened places on the island. I’m speaking of course about museums such as the Apothecary Hall (a former pharmacy established in the 19th century), the Caribbean Museum (a place to view the native art), or the museum of the Archaeological Society.
There are many more interesting monuments and historical sites in St. Croix and we encourage tourists to ask the personnel of their St. Croix resorts to guide them to these attractions. A good place to start your excursion is in Fort Christiansvaern in the town of Christiansted. It is the most well-preserved of the five Danish forts in the West Indies and a great reflection of the Danish military architecture in the late 1700s.
8. Visit the Botanical Gardens
This was once a sugarcane plantation of over 16 acres. Today, it’s been transformed into one of the greenest most serene places on the Caribbean Sea. A great reason for pride in St Croix, the gardens also represent a place of refuge from the crowded beaches.
Note that the garden is part of St. Croix Heritage Trail which is a self-guided tour around the island’s most popular natural, historical, and cultural sites. Unfortunately, the trail is no longer maintained due to budget cuts. A print copy of its map is also unavailable in the island but there are digital copies online that you can download in case you do want to embark on this self-guided tour.
Have we enticed your curiosity yet? Are you ready to book a few tickets and visit the fascinating island of St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands? If so, don’t forget to visit all the incredible attractions that we’ve mentioned above. Don’t end your bucket list with those either because there is still so much more to see and many more things to do on this beautiful island.
As a last tip, you will also want to see the monument at Point Udall. Why? Because this point of St. Croix is also the easternmost point of the whole of the US.
